My First Zucchini

by katerina on June 21, 2008

I am officially a proud mama. Will you look at this? The beginnings of the first squash to come out of my garden. I know, I know zucchini are allegedly dead easy to grow but I am still new to this whole veggie garden thing and I am easily impressed. (He is only about an inch big.)
My First ZucchiniLast year my only big success were my peas and herb garden. What didn’t succeed was fennel, butternut and tomatoes. This year I intend to be more successful. We built a new garden which gets more sun. I have planted the zucchini, some tomatoes, eight ball and butternut (again) as well as some radishes, leeks, kale, lettuce, arugula and of course peas. So far the lettuce and the arugula are pumping out enough to have a full size salad every two weeks or so. Maybe more if I was around to tend to them. (This garden is at our cottage so it has to be a low maintenance garden.) Here you can see what is in the salad tonight along with some herbs for the chicken and dressing.
My First ZucchiniAs for herbs I have rosemary (4 plants cause I am obsessed), thyme (3 also obsessed), tarragon, chives, sage, parsley, oregano, lavender, and tomorrow this basil which I grew from seed. Our winter has been rather… lengthy so I didn’t want to plant them until I was sure it would survive.

Congratulations! I may be the only person in the world who can’t grow zucchini…..although last year it was an early frost that did mine in. No flowers on mine yet this year (weather has been terrible) but I’m keeping my fingers crossed. I do have two tomatos almost ready to pick!

Jan – Thanks on both counts!

Kalyn – somehow silly but it is very rewarding growing from seed isn’t it?

Sara – I knew it couldn’t be as easy as people said. I am not counting my zuke until I am eating them.

I wish I would have planted more herbs, but time got away from me. I did plant a zucchini plant, but I’m afraid I planted it too late and it won’t have enough time to grow. I guess I’ll wait and see!
