Green Smoothie Recipe

Green Smoothie Recipe
You will think this is weird. Maybe even gross. I know I used to think it was and J is still very unconvinced, however, after I tried adding kale and spinach to my smoothies I am now totally addicted. Not only is it a great way to get your greens but it is also delicious. I have taken to having one of these for breakfast and then having a bowl of cereal a few hours later.

So seriously, if you are looking for ways to use up your kale or spinach or to get more greens in your diet give this a try. I discovered these when the Green Monsters became all the rage around the healthy blog world. Thankfully my curiosity got the better of me and I have been drinking them ever since. Plus, my skin had never looked better.

Green Smoothie Recipe
(makes 1 very large smoothie)

2 cups spinach, packed
1/2 banana, (try freezing it!)
1/2 cup blueberries
1 teaspoon flax (optional)
3/4 cup milk. almond milk, soy milk, water etc.
a handful of ice

Blend above in a blender until smooth.

Variations are endless try swapping blueberries for strawberries, raspberries or mango. You can substitute spinach or chard for the kale, I have also heard Romaine works well to, although stay away from arugula. Just trust me on this one. I like to add a tablespoon of peanut butter or almond butter or some protein powder, and a dash of flax seed too as it makes it more of a meal.

  1. I'll have to take your word on this one!!! I agree on the health issue, but the color will put my family off….no offense intended!!!

  2. I have to say – it sure does look gross, but I've heard such good things about green smoothies. I'll have to try one next time I have extra greens on hand!

  3. I know it totally does look gross doesn't it? The blueberries don't hep the colour either, if you use strawberries it turns a more vibrant green.

Try spinach for your first time, you won't even taste it I swear.

  4. I'm a recent convert to green smoothies as well, thanks to all of the Cooking Away My CSA discussions. I love the variety – different greens, fruits, liquids, add-ins. They never get boring!

  5. The color of this smoothie is indeed weird…. but, I would still give it a try. I believe it is an original smoothie recipe and thanks for sharing!

My brain tells me this is a great idea and that I should try it the next time a make a smoothie.

My eyes are telling my fingers to cover them. Quickly.

Wonder if there's a way to make it really, really green — as in pesto green — and then brain and eyes would be in agreement. Perhaps swap apples for the blueberries?

  7. Charmian – swapping blueberries for strawberries has that effect, apples would do it too I think.
