5 Spice Crockpot Pot Roast

While getting motivated to eat one more pot roast can be a challenge, it’s worth it since they are just so easy to make! To avoid feeling repetitive next time try this beef crockpot recipe made with Chinese 5-spice powder and carrots. Serve with jasmine rice and lots of green onion.

Five Spice Pot Roast

(serves 6)

2 cups thickly sliced carrot
2 teaspoons 5 spice powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon white pepper
2lb beef pot roast
1 tablespoons vegetable oil
1/2 cup stock
1 teaspoon sesame oil
2 tablespoons soy sauce
1 tablespoon chinese cooking wine
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1 tablespoon julienne ginger
1 tablespoon julienne garlic
1 star anise
1/2 stick cinnamon
the zest of 1/2 an orange
3 green onions, chopped

1. Combine the 5 spice, salt and white pepper. Pat the meat dry and cover in the spice blend.

2. Place the carrots in the slow cooker. Heat a medium skillet to medium high heat and add oil. When oil is hot, brown the roast on all sides. Place on top of the carrots. Add the stock to the pan and scrape up any brown bits. Add the liquid to the slow cooker along with all remaining ingredients except green onions.

3. Cook on low for 10-12 hours.

4. Spoon any excess fat from the top of the liquid, and serve with green onions on top.
